－ 5566 人气下滑，是由于他们在过去两年很少曝光率
－当红艺人例如飞轮海和罗志祥在周末举行的签唱会吸引至少3000粉丝
－可是5566在一个下雨天的星期一能吸引1000位粉丝算不错
－ 5566 的专辑预购有3000多张，也是算不错

THREE years ago, they attracted a record-high fan turnout of 15,000 at Junction 8.

Four years ago, they had a 10,000-strong turn out at Merlion Park.

Last night, 1,000 fans turned up to welcome Taiwanese pop group 5566 at Bukit Panjang Plaza.

Has the four-member boy band gone a little damp, just like the weather yesterday?

Well, it depends on who you ask.

Even the group's most diehard fans told The New Paper that 5566's popularity here has waned since its last autograph session in November 2005, also held at Bukit Panjang Plaza.

Some cite the band's lack of presence here and low media profile in the past two years as reasons.

But 5566's record label Warner Music argued that the group, which comprise members Tony Sun, Zax Wang, Sam Wang and Jason Hsu, still garnered a 'sizeable crowd' yesterday.

Warner's marketing manager Wendy Lum reasoned that the session was planned at the 'last minute' - the result of the guys being invited here by MediaCorp to present trophies at the Star Awards on Sunday - and there was no time to generate any publicity for it.

Granted, it is now common for current hot favourites like boy band Fahrenheit and singer Show Luo to attract up to 3,000 fans to their autograph sessions, usually held on weekends.

But 5566's 1,000 turnout on a rainy weekday evening - which filled the venue nicely without any spills - still said something about its pop appeal.

The group is slated to make a comeback next year by releasing its new album Bravo on 4 Jan, in a head-on marketing collision with the newer Fahrenheit.

Warner said a pre-sale was launched here early last week and more than 3,000 copies have been sold since.

Ms Lum added that this is a 'very good response', given the slump in record sales.

But, even 5566's most ardent supporters will admit that the group, best known for its zany image and talents in acting, singing, dancing and hosting, has lost some of its star appeal.

The band's official fan club has also disbanded - its chairman Tony Yap, 26, has also quit his shipping job to become a freelance photojournalist.

Mr Yap, who was at Bukit Panjang Plaza to report on the event, said the band has lost many fans who have outgrown it, but it still has a core group of diehard fans.

'A lot of them will still buy albums to support 5566, even if they don't go for events,' he added.

Another sign of 5566's popularity slide is that fans no longer have to start queuing so early to see the band upclose.

Self-professed 'kiasu' fan Siti Aishah, 19, said she once queued for a week to reserve a good spot at 5566's autograph session.

This time, she started queuing with two friends only from 1pm on Sunday, and they were the first to arrive.

Siti, who is part of a group of 5566 fans who call themselves Zui Xing (Star Chasers in Mandarin), blames the band's popularity decline on its low profile in the past two years.

'They haven't appeared here for so long that some people think they've disbanded,' she lamented.

'But no, they're just doing promotions elsewhere and preparing for their new album. All of us have liked them from the beginning and we have faith in them.'

Another fan, Angela Chong, 27, said that many fans had switched loyalties to newer groups like Fahrenheit.

She said: 'But I'm still here to support them, even though I'm on medical leave for a foot fracture. Ms Chong, a sales executive, started queuing at 10am yesterday.'

But the good news for the hardcore fans is that 5566 will be popping by again, possibly in early February, for another round of album promotions.

Band leader Tony promised so, while Sam dryly added that they 'might as well live here'.

To which Tony said: 'Honestly I've been thinking about this, but Singapore homes are really too expensive.'

For 5566 to revive its popularity, a fan, who called herself Penguin Chew, suggested that the band should get closer to fans with a handshake session - she claimed it has never been done before.

To that, Mr Yap thinks fans have certainly become more demanding.

But, for some young fans, seeing the guys in the flesh is more than enough to make their day.

Eleven-year-old Ng Shiqi, for one, was seen standing in the rain with her mother holding an umbrella.

The girl, who likes Tony, said shyly: 'He's more handsome in person.'

歌手藝人上這節目,人不到,間接在星馬也像去宣傳一樣.

cos singapore has no news to report! haha.
so just have to make do with what we have.
